  • Having graduated from FAMU in Prague film (1971), Agnieszka Holland returned to Poland and began her film career working with Krzysztof Zanussi as assistant director, and Andrzej Wajda as her mentor. Her first feature film was PROVINCIAL ACTORS (1978), one of the flagship pictures of the "cinema of moral disquiet" and the winner of the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980. Subsequently, she made the films FEVER (1980) and THE LONELY WOMAN (1981). In 1981, just before the declaration of the state of emergency in Poland, Agnieszka Holland emigrated to France.

    She directed ANGRY HARVEST (1985) which was nominated for a foreign-language Oscar. Her film EUROPA EUROPA (1990) also received a U.S. Academy Award nomination (best screenplay) and IN DARKNESS (2011) was again nominated as best foreign-language film. She also collaborated with her friend Krzysztof Kieslowski on the screenplay of his trilogy, THREE COLOURS (1993).

    Holland's other films include TO KILL A PRIEST (1988), OLIVIER, OLIVIER (1992), THE SECRET GARDEN (1993), TOTAL ECLIPSE (1995), WASHINGTON SQUARE (1997), THE THIRD MIRACLE (1999), SHOT IN THE HEART (2001), JULIE WALKING HOME (2001), COPYING BEETHOVEN (2006), IN DARKNESS (2011), BURNING BUSH (2013), SPOOR (2017), MR. JONES (2019) and CHARLATAN (2020). She also directed several episodes of many notable TV series, including THE WIRE, JAG, COLD CASE, TREME (for the pilot of the latter she was nominated for an Emmy) and HOUSE OF CARDS. Agnieszka Holland has also written or co-written screenplays for films made by other directors and directed plays for Polish television. She was elected chairwoman of the Board of the European Film Academy in 2014 and was elected as its President in 2021.

    Katarzyna "Kasia" Adamik (born 28 December 1972) is a Polish director and storyboard artist. She has directed TV series including 1983, Axis Mundi, and Absentia. Her debut film feature as director, Bark!, was in competition at Sundance Film Festival. Adamik and Olga Chajdas shared the award for Best TV Show at the Polish Film Awards for directing drama The Pack. A Hollywood Reporter article listed her among "four of the country's most prominent directors", naming her alongside the fellow Polish directors she worked on for conspiracy thriller series 1983, which was Netflix's first Polish original series.

    Personal life

    Adamik was born in Warsaw, the daughter of Polish film director Agnieszka Holland and Slovak opera director Laco Adamík. Her aunt is film director Magdalena Łazarkiewicz. She graduated in graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.

    She came out as a lesbian in 2012.

    Career

    Adamik debuted in the film industry in 1993. She has worked as a storyboard artist on an array of movies, including In Darkness, Copying Beethoven, Everything Is Illuminated, Catwoman, Trapped, Julie Walking Home, Angel of Death, Hearts in Atlantis, Angel Eyes, Golden Dreams, Battlefield Earth, Na koniec swiata, The Third Miracle, The Wood, Beloved, Wicked, Polish Wedding, Washington Square, and Total Eclipse.1983, a Polish-language TV series directed by Adamik and Agnieszka Holland, debuted on Netflix in 2018 as the streaming service's first Polish-language original production.

    Agnieszka Holland (Polish:[aɡˈɲɛʂkaˈxɔlant]; born 28 November 1948) is a Polish film and television director and screenwriter, best known for her cultural and political contributions to Polish cinema. She began her career as an assistant to directors Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda, and emigrated to France shortly before the 1981 imposition of the martial law in Poland.

    Holland is best known for her films Europa Europa (1990), for which she received a Golden Globe Award as well as an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay nomination,The Secret Garden (1993), Angry Harvest and the Holocaust drama In Darkness, the last two of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2017, she received the Alfred Bauer Prize (Silver Bear) for her film Spoor at the Berlin International Film Festival. She is also a four-time winner of the Grand Prix at the Gdynia Film Festival. In 2020, she was elected President of the European Film Academy. In 2023, her film Green Border won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival.

    In her films, Holland often focuses on the individual experiences of people who find themselves on the sidelines of political events. A recurring theme she explores is the critique of Nazi and communist crimes.

    Early life and education

    Holland was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1948. She is the daughter of journalists Irena (née Rybczyńska) and Henryk Holland, who had been a prominent Communist activist since 1935 and a captain in the Soviet Army. Holland's mother was Roman Catholic and her father Jewish, but she was not brought up in either faith.
