Almaas spent the majority of her early career working as a second unit or assistant director. Her first job was as second assistant director for the straight-to-video 1996 action-drama Bounty Hunters. She also worked on the Canadian coroner crime-mystery series Da Vinci's Inquest for five years, serving as first assistant director of 31 episodes.

In 2003, Almaas joined the crew of the American television series Smallville, where she served as first assistant director on 62 episodes, before she went on to direct nine episodes herself. She earned a "Best Direction" nomination from the Directors Guild of Canada for the Smallville episode entitled "Identity". In 2011, she joined the crew of the fantasy-drama The Secret Circle, where she once again served as first assistant director. Since then, she has served as director of episodes of a string of well-known TV shows, including Alphas, the American version of Being Human, iZombie, The 100, Dark Matter, Lucifer and 12 Monkeys.
