Dr Imran (Angelo) Farooq Is Running for the California State Senate
By Ras H. Siddiqui
Elections in California next year are bound to produce some excitement. Out of the 40 California State Senators, there are currently 32 Democrats and 8 Republicans. That may or may not change by the time the 2024 elections results come in, but in California’s 31 st senatorial district, incumbent Senator Richard Roth will no longer be running due to term limits. On the other hand, one highly qualified person who is running in this heavily democratic district (Riverside & adjacent areas) is Dr Imran (Angelo) Farooq.
Dr Imran (Angelo) Farooq is a native Californian, the son of a father from Karachi and mother from Punjab (Kasur area). And his wife, Vessy Farooq, is a Bulgarian immigrant to this country. The couple also have a daughter named Maya. Dr Farooq, an American of Pakistani heritage is a proud Punjabi too. He is no stranger to diversity as his family is a true reflection of it. In 2024, he aspires to be the first South Asian to become a California State Senator.
There are several reasons why he qualifies for our support. Dr Farooq was born and raised in the inland empire area which encompasses District 31. He has an impressive educational background with a bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkeley, plus Executive master’s and Doctorate of Policy, Planning and Development degrees from the University of Southern California (USC). He also has administrative experience as Director of Economic Development at the University of California Riverside (UCR) and has also previously taught entrepreneurship at the Graduate School of Business there.
Dr Farooq has also been involved in public service for a number of years in California. He has been elected twice (spanning nine years total through 2024) to the Board of Education for Riverside Unified School District (RUSD), He is also a delegate British-Pakistani politician Imran Farooq (Urdu: عمران فاروق; 14 June 1960 – 16 September 2010) was a British-Pakistani politician best known senior role in the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a political party in Pakistan. As a founding member of the All Pakistan Muhajir Student Organization, Farooq held various significant positions within MQM and the Pakistani government. From 1999 until his assassination, he lived in self-imposed exile in London. Imran Farooq was born in Karachi, Pakistan. His father, Farooq Ahmed, originally from Delhi, British India (now India), migrated to Pakistan after its independence 1947 and was later elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. Farooq himself was a physician, graduating with an MBBS degree from Sindh Medical College in Karachi in 1985. In 2004, he married Shumaila Nazar, a former member of the Sindh Assembly. The couple had two children. Farooq was related to Tahir Qureshi, a former MPA, and his great-grandfather once served as the governor of Delhi. In 2019, several news agencies reported that Shumaila Farooq was living in extreme poverty with her two sons, relying on handouts from the British government. In 2020, on a Geo News talk show, she revealed that she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Oral Cancer in 2019 and that none of the leaders of MQM reached out for help. Although he was not a writer by profession, Farooq authored several works during his lifetime. His best known contribution is The Guiding Principles of MQM. In 1978, Farooq helped established the All Pakistan Muhajir Student Organization. When in 1984, it gave birth to the Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM), Farooq served as its first Secretary General and Convener. He was a student of Sindh Medical College and began his political career with the All Pakistan Mohajir Students' Organization (APMSO) in April 1979 and later on appointed as Secretary General of the APMSO. After the formation of Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM) on 18 March 1984, Dr. Imran Farooq became the Secretary General of the party and used his abilities for spreading the philosophy of MQM Founder and Leader Mr. Altaf Hussain. In 1988 and 1990 Dr. Imran Farooq took part in the General Elections and on both occasions he was successfully elected with overwhelming majority as the Member of the Pakistan National Assembly and became Parliamentary Leader of the MQM. As Mr. Altaf Hussain’s life was constantly under threat in Pakistan; Dr. Imran Farooq was amongst those who advised Mr. Hussain for his safety to leave the country and lead the party from abroad. In January 1992, Mr. Hussain left for Britain and has lived here in exile since then. Soon after the commencement of the State Operation against the MQM in June 1992, Dr Imran Farooq was left with no choice but to go in hiding. He remained “underground” for seven years. As a result of courageous and bold leadership while remaining in hiding, Mr. Altaf Hussain declared him as “Hero of the Nation”. In total disregard to the legal justice system the Establishment pronounce head money on the capture “Dead or Alive” of Dr Imran Farooq in 1992 (later on this act of the Establishment was challenged by the MQM in the courts and was termed as “illegal and unconstitutional” by the Sindh High Court).
