The What So Proudly We Hail literary-based e-curriculum, created by distinguished teacher-scholars Amy Kass and Leon Kass, is a rich source of materials compiled to aid in the classroom instruction of American history, civics, social studies, and language arts. This collection of classic American stories, speeches, and songs is based on the Kasses’ critically acclaimed anthology of the same name. It seeks to educate both hearts and minds about American ideals, American identity and national character, and the virtues and aspirations of our civic life.

Drummer, percussionist, and songwriter Martin Ditcham has been involved in world class recordings and perfomances for over three decades. Collaborations have included The Rolling Stones, Sade, Elton John, Tina Turner, Everything But The Girl, U2, Mary Black, Diana Ross, Brian May, and Chris Rea.

Martin grew up in a musical family, with a drummer father who encouraged him at a young age. His thirst for music meant that at school he said yes to all the offers of lessons in learning Trumpet, Violin & Recorder, playing in the school orchestra for assembly on alternate days. Playing along to the radio on his fathers Ajax kit, he soon got keen to want to play with other musicians. From age 12, he was playing with bands at youth clubs and also doing entertainment spots at functions. From that age onwards he'd deputise for his father in various function bands.

The British Blues Boom in the mid 60s sparked a lifelong love of the genre and meant that during this time there were musicians around eager to play, particularly the Chicago Style. Experiencing Peter Green at the Marquee Club was one of the great musical moments. Trying to get in anywhere to see Eric Clapton with John Mayall was almost impossible. The Blues led to Jazz, and another lifelong love affair. Playing around town with various musicians led to an invitation to play with the leading experimental group Henry Cow featuring guitarist Fred Frith, still a leader on the New York experimental scene. Then at age 19, came an invitation to tour with Nucleus,  the UKs most successful Jazz Rock group which included at that time, on guitar, Alan Holdsworth. The 70s led to living a nocturnal existence doing residences in Londons West End night clubs, of which there were many, plus Hotels & Pubs.

Finnish (endonym: suomi[ˈsuo̯mi] or suomen kieli[ˈsuo̯meŋˈkie̯li]) is a Finnic language of the Uralic language family, spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside of Finland. Finnish is one of the two official languages of Finland, alongside Swedish. In Sweden, both Finnish and Meänkieli (which has significant mutual intelligibility with Finnish) are official minority languages. Kven, which like Meänkieli is mutually intelligible with Finnish, is spoken in the Norwegian counties of Troms and Finnmark by a minority of Finnish descent.

American inventor, businessman, and chemist (1863–1914)

Charles Martin Hall (December 6, 1863 – December 27, 1914) was an American inventor, businessman, and chemist. He is best known for his invention in 1886 of an inexpensive method for producing aluminium, which became the first metal to attain widespread use since the prehistoric discovery of iron. He was one of the founders of Alcoa, along with Alfred E. Hunt; Hunt's partner at the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory, George Hubbard Clapp; Hunt's chief chemist, W. S. Sample; Howard Lash, head of the Carbon Steel Company; Millard Hunsiker, sales manager for the Carbon Steel Company; and Robert Scott, a mill superintendent for the Carnegie Steel Company. Together they raised $20,000 to launch the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, which was later renamed Aluminum Company of America and then shortened to Alcoa.

Biography

Early years

Charles Martin Hall was born to Herman Bassett Hall and Sophronia H. Brooks on December 6, 1863, in Thompson, Ohio. Charles's father, Herman, graduated from Oberlin College in 1847, and studied for three years at the Oberlin Theological Seminary, where he met his future wife, Sophronia Brooks. They married in 1849, and the next ten years were spent in missionary work in Jamaica, where the first five of their eight children were born. They returned to Ohio in 1860, after the outbreak of the Civil War forced the closing of foreign missions. Charles Hall had two brothers and five sisters; one brother died in infancy. One of his sisters was chemist Julia Brainerd Hall (1859–1925), who helped him in his research.
