David Soul (born David Richard Solberg; August 28, 1943 – January 4, 2024) was an American-British actor and singer. With a career spanning five decades, he rose to prominence for portraying Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the American television series Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979. His other notable roles included Joshua Bolt on Here Come the Brides from 1968 to 1970 and as the lead actor in the 1979 American TV movie Salem's Lot. Soul also had moderate success as a film actor when he portrayed Officer John Davis in Magnum Force in 1973.

During his career, Soul also found success as a singer, achieving a number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1977 with "Don't Give Up on Us", which also peaked at number one in the United Kingdom and Canada.   • David Soul (born August 28, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American actor and British citizen and singer best known for his role as the "seat-of-the-pants" California police detective Ken 'Hutch' Hutchinson (opposite co-star and long-time friend Paul Michael Glaser) in the cult television program Starsky and Hutch (1975-79).

    Originally David Richard Solberg, he was born the son of a Lutheran minister. His father, Dr. Richard Solberg, was a senior representative for Lutheran World Relief during the reconstruction of Germany after World War II, and the family moved frequently while Soul was growing up. Soul's brother is a Lutheran minister and social activist.

    Soul first gained attention as the mysterious "Covered Man" on several appearances on The Merv Griffin Show in 1967 in which he sang while wearing a ski mask and explained, "My name is David Soul, and I want to be known for my music".

    Soul then appeared as level-headed Joshua Bolt on the television program Here Come the Brides, and later Arthur Hill's law partner on, "Owen Marshal: Counselor At Law". Superstar status came when he portrayed Detective Hutchinson on Starsky and Hutch. He has also made guest appearances on shows such as I Dream of Jeannie, McMillan and Wife, Cannon, Gunsmoke, World War III (miniseries), Star Trek, and The Streets of San Francisco. His best known film appearance was opposite Clint Eastwood in Magnum Force (1973). Soul also appeared in the mini-series based on Stephen King's horror classic "Salem's Lot" (1978).

    After a successful singing career, including hits such as "Don't Give Up on Us" and "Silver Lady", Soul fell into relative obscurity during the 1980s, fought a long battle with alcoholism, although frequently made guest appearances in various US television series, with the occasional small film role.

    His career began with small roles in television series such as Flipper (1967), I Dream of Jeannie (1967), and Star Trek (1967) as Makora.

    In 1968 he played the role of Joshua Bolt on the television comedy Here Come the Brides. In the early '70s he continued to work as a guest actor in shows and series for television such as The Young Rebels (1970), Dan August (1971), Ironside (1971), All in the Family (1972), The Streets of San Francisco (1972), The F.B.I. (1972), Ghost Story (1973), Cannon (1973).

    He also got two small roles in the films Johnny Got His Gun (1971), and Magnum Force (1974, with Clint Eastwood), Soul plays of role Officer John Davis one of the members of the death squad.

    In 1974 he co-starred with Glenn Ford in the television film The Disappearance of Flight 412 directed by Jud Taylor. In 1979, Soul starred in Salem's Lot, a horror movie about vampires

    The decade of the 1980s brought a lot of work television to Soul. He got starring roles in Swan Song (1980), Rage! (1980), Homeward Bound (1981), World War III (1982), and Through Naked Eyes (1983).

    One of his best films was In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders (1988), directed by Dick Lowry. He plays a criminal who, with an accomplice, committed a long string of crimes in the state of Florida. they meet in a bloody shootout with FBI members.

    In the 1990s Soul worked on the big screen with Dolph Lundgren in Pentathlon (1994), directed by Bruce Malmuth.

    David Soul is a celebrated American actor, best known for his role as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the TV series Starsky and Hutch, which aired from 1975-1979. Mr. Soul's career spans forty-five years, during which he has performed as an actor, director, producer, singer/songwriter, concert performer, and social activist.

    Mr. Soul attended Augustana College in South Dakota, USA, Universidad de las Américas, A.C. in Mexico City, Mexico, and the University of Minnesota in the United States.

    Mr. Soul has appeared on several television programs, including: The Merv Griffin Show, Flipper, Star Trek, Here Come the Brides, Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law, Streets of San Francisco, I Dream of Jeannie, McMillan & Wife, Cannon, Gunsmoke, All in the Family, Salem’s Lot, Casablanca, The Yellow Rose, The Key to Rebecca, and Family Ties.
