In a bid to rectify the deep-rooted corruption and mismanagement of medical supplies within the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa), President William Ruto appointed a new board chairperson, Mr Irungu Nyakera. With a track record of academic excellence and a diverse professional background, Mr Nyakera brings a fresh perspective to the scandal-laden state corporation. His appointment marks a turning point in Kemsa’s history, as he pledges to lead the agency out of what he describes as a mess.
Early Life and Education
Irungu Nyakera, born in Murang’a, Kenya, in 1982, showcased exceptional academic talent from an early age. He commenced his education at the esteemed Starehe Boys’ Centre and School, where he received a full scholarship sponsored by Save the Children Austria and Save the Children Fund, British Columbia, Canada. In 1996, he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination. His academic success continued during his secondary education at Starehe Boys’ Center, where he served as the School Captain and ranked 32nd among 130,000 candidates in the 2000 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. Nyakera pursued his educational pursuits further by obtaining a certificate in Management Information Systems from the Kenya Institute of Management.
Before his university studies, Nyakera taught Physics and Computer Studies at Nyahururu Elite Schools while awaiting admission. In 2002, he joined the University of Nairobi’s Chiromo campus to pursue medicine. Notably, Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin, the Founder and then Director of Starehe Boys’ Centre and School, granted Nyakera a full scholarship to attend Deerfield Academy as a gap year student. His intellectual potential gained global recognition, with admission offers from 14 out of the 18 schools he applied to abroad. He is vying for the seat on the Farmers party ticket and he believes he is the best-suited candidate to steer the county to greater heights and improve the livelihoods of the people. Who is this man who wants to succeed Mwangi wa Iria? Nyakera was born in a family of three children to a single mother Nancy Njoki who died when he was eight years old. Their maternal grandparents raised them to their adulthood. He is the first born. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management science and engineering (majoring in finance analysis and decision engineering) from Stanford University. He started off his career at Citigroup Investment Bank in the UK before relocating to Kenya after the global economic turmoil in 2008. He joined the NIC capital where he rose to the Managing Director rank at 28 years. He went back to London where he worked with Frontier Markets Fund Managers and in 2014, he came back to Kenya and joined Equity Group Holdings as the Managing Director of Equity Investment Bank. In 2015, at the age of 33, Nyakera was appointed the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Transport and Infrastructure where he oversaw the construction of the Nairobi Mombasa SGR and the upgrading of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. He was later relocated to the ministry of devolution and planning where he spearheaded the development of the National Economic Development Plan commonly referred to as Vision 2030 and the development of the County Development Plans among others. In 2020, he was appointed the chairman of Kenya Tea lobby sector which ignited the debate on reforms in the tea and coffee sub-sectors demanding better prices for the farmers. After high school, she pursued a BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. In 2016, she proceeded to the University of Edinburgh under the Chevening Scholarship to pursue an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems, which she successfully completed in 2017. Vane is a renewable energy professional with a passion for sustainability and climate change, and she has held various positions in the field in Kenya, the UK, and Sweden. She is currently working as an Energy Project Manager at Ramboll, a Danish multinational architecture, engineering, and consulting company. In her free time, Vane enjoys traveling, fitness and wellness activities, exploring the outdoors, reading, volunteering, learning new languages, cooking, and networking. In the near future, Vane aims to use the skills and knowledge she has gained in her working career to influence renewable energy and climate-related policy decisions back home, and continue contributing to a sustainable future for all. Irungu Nyakera Wilson Irungu Nyakera Wilson Irungu Nyakera also known as Irungu Nyakera (born 13 May 1982) is a Stanford-educated technocrat who has served in various leadership roles in banks both locally and abroad. He was appointed as Principal Secretary, State Department of Transport, Ministry of Transport, infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development by the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2015. Nyakera was born in Murang'a County to a single mother, Nancy Njoki Wairugu who later settled in Kinyago slums in Eastleigh of Nairobi area where she worked as a casual labourer. Nyakera was raised in a strict family and thanks to his mother's “street connections”, he was enrolled to Class One in January 1989 at the prestigious Starehe Boys’ Centre and School in Nairobi on full scholarship from Save the Children Fund Austria and Save the Children Fund British Columbia, Canada. In 1991, his mother passed away leaving behind Nyakera, then 8 years, and his two younger sisters, Joyce at 4 years and Eunice at 1 month old who were raised by their maternal grandparents. Nyakera's grandfather passed on in 1996 after a bout of celebral malaria leaving him in the care of his grandmother, Joyce Wambui Wairugu.
