During his more than 38 years of distinguished service, Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson (Ret.) commanded units from platoon to corps and culminated his career as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. In this role he was responsible for all operations involving more than 180,000 soldiers deployed in 140 countries as well as supporting all emergency operations in the U.S., including relief efforts for disasters such as Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Florence. He also was responsible for all Army training, leadership development, education policy, mobilization and staff preparedness, and oversaw a budget of $23.2 billion.
As Commanding General of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, LTG Anderson was responsible for four combat divisions, including more than 275,000 men and women on multiple military bases with units engaged in combat in Afghanistan. He was also Commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, which was a coalition of 48 nations.
Earlier positions in the Army include Commanding General of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, CO; Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization at U.S. Department of the Army Headquarters in Washington, DC; Chief of Staff of the Multi-National Forces for Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq; Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox, KY; Chief of Staff III Corps at Fort Hood, TX, and Chief of Staff of the Multi-National Corps for Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, which was a coalition of 26 nations; and various assignments of increasing responsibility and authority.
LTG Anderson completed the Senior Executive Education Course at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School. Mr. Joseph B. Anderson, Jr. born in Topeka, Kansas, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1965, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Math and Engineering. He subsequently received two Masters Degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972 and 1973. Mr. Anderson attended the Army’s Command and General Staff College in 1977. He also is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program, 1984. In June 2007, Mr. Anderson received an Honorary Doctor of Management Degree from Kettering University and in December 2013 he received an Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science Degree from Central Michigan University.
During his military career, Mr. Anderson commanded troops as an infantry officer in the 82nd Airborne Division and served two tours of duty with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. In addition to troop command, Mr. Anderson served as aide-de-camp to two general officers, and he also was an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences at West Point. Mr. Anderson and the infantry platoon he commanded in Vietnam were subjects of the highly acclaimed documentary film “The Anderson Platoon”. The documentary has been shown in more than 20 countries and has won several prizes to include the Oscar of the Academy Awards and an Emmy for the “Best Documentary Film of 1967”. Mr. Anderson’s military awards include two silver stars, five bronze stars, three Army Commendation Medals, and eleven Air Medals. Mr. Anderson resigned his commission in 1978, after 13 years of service and early selection for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1977, Mr. Anderson was selected to be a White House Fellow and worked as Special Assistant to Secretary of Commerce, Juanita Kreps. Following his White House Fellow Year, Mr. Anderson continued to work for Secretary Kreps until he joined General Motors in 1979.
Mr. Anderson began his business career with General Motors in 1979 at Pontiac Motor Division. Upon completion of CGSC, Anderson served as the Majors Assignment Officer at Infantry Branch, Total Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, VA, from 1992 to 1993. He was subsequently assigned to the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks, HI, where he served as the Battalion S3 in 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry; 1st Brigade S3; Aide-de-Camp to the CG, USARPAC at Fort Shafter; and the 3rd Brigade Executive Officer. He then commanded the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, where he initially deployed in support of Task Force Hawk in Albania and subsequently led the first U.S. ground forces into Kosovo for Operation Joint Guardian. Following completion of the College of Naval Warfare in 2000 he remained in Newport, RI, as an instructor in the Joint Military Operations Department. From July 2002 to July 2004 he commanded the 2nd Brigade and 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I; he then served as the Division Chief of Staff. In February 2005, he was assigned as the Executive Officer to the Secretary of the Army and then became the III Corps Chief of Staff at Fort Hood, TX, in August 2006. General Anderson returned to Iraq in December 2006 to serve as the Mu US Marine Corps general officer and test pilot Joseph T. "Joe" Anderson (born February 21, 1946) is a retired United States Marine Corpsgeneral officer, combat veteran, and test pilot. During his military service, he made notable contributions to the Marine Corps' use of the Harrier jump jet. After retirement, he provided senior leadership to multiple organizations including the National Air and Space Museum. In 2017, Anderson retired from air show flying. Anderson was born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 21, 1946. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1964. He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Anderson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Anderson attended The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia, and was selected to attend Undergraduate Pilot Training with the United States Air Force at Craig Air Force Base, Alabama. Upon receiving Air Force Silver Wings, he reported for duty to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, earning his U.S. Navy Wings of Gold and becoming combat qualified in the F-4 Phantom. He remains one of the very few pilots to be awarded both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy pilot wings. He served with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314 (VMFA-314) at Marine Corps Air StationEl Toro flying the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. In 1971, Anderson was assigned to the "Silver Eagles" of VMFA-115 where he flew combat missions in the Republics of Vietnam and Thailand. Upon return from Vietnam in 1973, he transitioned to the Hawker Siddeley Harrier (AV-8A) when he served with Marine Attack Squadrons VMA-231 and VMA-542, and also with Marine Attack Training Squadron VMAT-203.
