Biography of famous celebrity dogs
9 Most Famous Dogs In History
As faithful and loving animals, Dogs have always been considered our best friends and most loyal companions, and while humble and selfless at heart, they often find ways into the spotlight, gaining the affection and adoration of the public, and that's what inspired the team at Farmer Pete’s to create a list of the most famous dogs in history.
Not surprisingly, some of the most famous dogs in history have graced the silver screen, seen wartime, been key counterparts in our scientific discoveries, and helped our servicemen in times of trouble.
The Top 9 Dogs Who Changed World History
However, you may not have heard about some of these famous dogs in history, so let’s take a skip down memory lane.
1. Toto – Cairn Terrier
Undeniably the most famous dog in history is Toto.
Toto, whose real name was Terry, was abandoned as a puppy. Luckily for her, however, she was adopted by German immigrant Carl Spitz, the unofficial dog-trainer of Hollywood.
With his help, she was trained to become one of her generation's most coveted canine actresses, starring alongside some of the time’s biggest stars, including Judy Garland.
The role of Toto in the 1939 film was played by Terry and it’s reported that she was paid $125 each week, which was more than some of the human actors! Before her close-up in The Wizard of Oz, Terry was already well-versed in the ways of the silver screen. By the end of her career, she had been cast in 17 films, living to be 11-years old.
You may not have considered this, but without Toto, none of the events in The Wizard of Oz would have transpired to begin with. Dorothy runs away from home with Toto to save him from the horrible Miss Gulch who wants to have him euthanised for biting her. Therefore, Dorothy is outside the storm shelter when the tornado hits, transporting her and Toto to Oz. What’s more, it’s also because of Toto that the company discover that the Wizard is a fraud too!
2. Lassie - Rough Collie

While he may have been right about the dog’s unbridled, innocent joy, the idea that canines are most suited to children is debunked in The Dog in Photography, a comprehensive Taschen-published volume that charts the animal’s presence in culture and images from 1839 to the present day. Compiled by Raymond Merritt, the book examines the dog’s role in society from the earliest days of image-making, and how our relationships with dogs have evolved over the centuries. One constant factor – throughout years of economic unrest, war, celebrity culture and technological breakthroughs – is the adoration between pets and owners. Here we look at eight famous dog-owners who are pictured in the tome with their beloved hounds. Entitled Joan Collins Relaxes, this 1955 Slim Aarons-lensed shot practically speaks for itself. Collins reclines on a pink bed, on pink cushions, in a pink room (complete with a telephone of the same hue on the bedside table) and clutches a pink poodle to her chest. A fresh-faced John F. Kennedy toured Europe in the late 1930s, and encountered on the journey a dachshund puppy. Having had an affinity for dogs since childhood – and indeed having grown up surrounded by them – Kennedy appears naturally at ease with the diminutive hound. Elizabeth Taylor once commented that “some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses”, and the actress unashamedly treasured dogs throughout her life. In her later years she would favour maltese terriers – a breed characterised by their small frame and fluffy white coat – though in 1957 she owned a miniature poodle, who was simila If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that some dogs have much cooler jobs than I do. I suppose it’s hard to compete with those little furry bundles of fun, especially when they are talented as well. Probably the coolest job for a dog, just like with humans, is being a movie star, so if a pooch has an open mind and a nose for learning tricks, celebrity status can be within paws’ reach. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the most famous dog actors in Hollywood. One of the first big animal stars was Rin Tin Tin, a German Shepherd. Rescued by an American serviceman from France just before the end of World War I, Rin Tin Tin starred in over 20 films, including hit titles such as Where the North Begins, also starring silent film actress, Claire Adams. His movies made so much money that he is credited entirely with saving Warner Brothers from bankruptcy. At the height of his career, he was making $6000 a week, a tidy sum for 1926. He also had a personal chef, who would prepare his daily lunch of tenderloin steak, which he would eat while listening to classical musical to aid his digestion. It certainly was a dog’s life for Rin Tin Tin. Terry, a Cairn Terrier, also achieved quite a level of fame, but you probably know her better as Toto. Yes, she is the famous dog from The Wizard of Oz. She not only attended the premiere of the movie at the infamous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, but made almost $125 a week during the filming of The Wizard of Oz – more than most of what the human actors in the film were earning. But sadly, it wasn’t all glitz and glam for Terry. Her foot was broken on set when one of the witch’s guards accidentally stepped on her. Terry recuperated in the home of Judy Garland who became quite attached to her and wanted to adopt the small bundle of fur, but was not permitted to by Toto’s trainers. She even has her own biography called I, To HISTORY’S FAMOUS DOG’s Facebook posts have become very popular on Ark Animal Centre’s Facebook page.
