One builds roads, another seams and stitches lingerie. One rolls aluminium foils, another moulds students keen to crack the IIT entrance. The four entrepreneurs profiled on this page are as diverse as they can get. But they are similar too. All four are under 45 and they are first generation entrepreneurs.

In October, when the sensex was hovering around 18, points, these four were the only young entrepreneurswhose companies had around Rs crore in market capitalisation and made it through our scrutiny. (There was a fifth, Rishi Agarwal, founder and managing director ABG Shipyard, but he declined to be interviewed for this piece).

All four are edgy, aggressive willing to take risks and sometimes controversial. This is a story about entrepreneurs who inherited little other than a desire to make it big on their own; who either started up new-age businesses with a competitive advantage or broke out from the traditional family trade after spotting a scrumptious opportunity elsewhere; and who are in growth mode — at least so far.

They are still not in the league of extraordinary industrialists — and there's little guarantee that they will ever get there. But together, they provide a glimpse of what the Indian business universe is like if you are willing to look outside the firmament of the Tatas, Birlas, Ambanis, Agarwals, Biyanis et al.

MUMBAI: Three days after TOI exposed the controversial dealings of BJP president Nitin Gadkari, eyebrows are being raised over the exponential growth of Ideal Road Builders (IRB), an infrastructure company set up by Virendra D Mhaiskar in
The low-profile Mhaiskar came into the limelight after it was found that he had given a huge personal loan to Gadkari’s Purti Power and Sugar Ltd (PPSL).
Senior bureaucrats say the growth trajectory of IRB has an unmistakable parallel with Gadkari’s own career. The company, which had constructed only 10 km of road in six years, went from sluggish to superfast after Gadkari took over as the public works minister in During Gadkari’s four-year ministership from to ’99, it bagged the prestigious contract for the maintenance of the Mumbai-Pune expressway as well as key contracts for the construction of new roads, either from the funding of the public works department or on a build, operate and transfer basis.
IRB saw a brief cooling period after the Shiv Sena-BJP government was voted out but it ricocheted back into the mainstream after Gadkari was appointed advisor of the prime minister’s rural road development plan. The company then bagged major contracts not only in Maharashtra but in BJP-ruled Gujarat.
“The information on the progress of IRB is not confidential; it is available on its website. The company claims to have constructed km of road and completed projects worth Rs 3, crore on a build, operate and transfer basis in Maharashtra, Gujarat and AP,” the bureaucrat said.
