On paper I guess you could look at my early career and say I was the internet poster child. By the age of 24, I had dropped out of America’s Stanford Graduate School of Business to co-found a now leading wedding site. We went on to sell it for £49 million. But by my mid-20s I had already learned the important truth that it’s possible to be commercially successful, but not really successful - because you’re not passionate about what you’re doing. I was standing among a group of saleswomen at a conference for a beauty company and their excitement was palpable. They were beaming with pride. And it struck me that the success of this company was about far more than make-up. It was about happiness and achievement for those women. At that moment I knew I wanted my next business to be like that. Never ask ‘Can this be achieved by a woman?’ That isn’t to say Stella & Dot was an overnight success. The main point about it, however, is that we’re empowering women to work in the way they want to, whether it’s flat out or just making a hundred pounds here and there. I’m often asked what lessons I’d like to pass on to my daughters from my years as an entrepreneur. One thing is to allow them to see opportunities rather than obstacles, whatever field they choose to work in.
