2019 CFDA Fashion Awards to Honor Barbie With Board of Directors’ Tribute Award
Barbie, the number-one fashion doll in the world, can add another notch to her skinny-waisted belt.
The doll, which celebrated its 60th birthday this year, will receive the Board of Directors’ Tribute award at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards. She is joining such past honorees as First Lady Michelle Obama, Tom Ford, Gloria Steinem, Janelle Monáe, Cecile Richards and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
Barbie has collaborated with more than 75 designers and influencers, including Gigi Hadid and Jeremy Scott for Moschino. The brand’s first designer partnership was with Oscar de la Renta in 1985. Barbie also collaborated with Bob Mackie, who will be awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony, on a collector doll series in 1990. In fact, Mackie began the Designer Collector series for Mattel and created more than 45 Barbie Collector Dolls for the brand.
Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Sui, Zac Posen, Badgley Mischka and Stephen Burrows are among the CFDA members who have created special dolls with Barbie.
“Barbie has had such wide influence on American fashion and culture,” said Steven Kolb, president and chief executive officer of the CFDA. “Her story personally resonates with so many CFDA members that the board of directors decided to honor her with the special tribute.”
Richard Dickson, president and chief operating officer of Mattel, said, “It is a tremendous honor for Barbie to be recognized by the CFDA board of directors for her contributions to American fashion. For the past six decades, Barbie has inspired and been inspired by fashion and creative communities. Barbie has had the great privilege of collaborating with some of the greatest designers of our time, and this award is a moment to celebrate her lasting influence.”

Gap announced on Wednesday that its new CEO will be Mattel executive Richard Dickson. Dickson has been credited with reviving the Barbie franchise during his tenure at the toy company. Gap is hoping he'll produce similar results after years of sales woes and strategic missteps. Dickson is scheduled to begin his new position in August. For decades, Gap was one of the most beloved retailers in the US and an emblematic part of American fashion and style. With its laid-back classics and iconic denim, the company became the go-to destination to obtain the effortless jeans-and-t-shirt look at an accessible price. Its vibrant marketing campaigns brimmed with catchy jingles and popular celebrities, and for a period in the 1990s and early 2000s, it seemed impossible to walk down a street in the US without seeing a Gap sweatshirt. However, the retailer has been caught in an uphill battle for relevance in an era where mall brands continue to lose their luster, falling behind trendy e-commerce sites and direct-to-consumer brands. Gap suddenly went from basic to bland, and now even bright spots like Old Navy, which is part of the brand's portfolio, may be losing their footing. Though Gap still remains the largest specialty retail company in the US — in addition to its namesake company and Old Navy, it also operates Banana Republic and Athleta — whether it will be able to gain relevance remains Image via UNO Today, Mattel Creations has released the latest addition to UNO’s Artiste Series, which finds their classic card game being reimagined with art from a number of amazing artists. Joining the series—which already features the likes of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Nina Chanel Abney—is Shepard Fairey, who’s a living legend in his own right. The man behind OBEY and President Barack Obama’s 2008 “HOPE” campaign poster has brought his work to the card game series in the new deck, which is available now over at Mattel Creations. “We are excited to partner with the renowned artist, Shepard Fairey,” said Richard Dickson, President and Chief Operating Officer at Mattel. “Through curated partnerships, Mattel Creations offers toys as art and art inspired by toys, and the UNO Artiste Series: Shepard Fairey collaboration is the embodiment of that philosophy.” Fairey explains that for him, being a part of the UNO Artiste Series was a blend of being in good company with some phenomenal artists and a sense of nostalgia; he, like many of us, played UNO as a kid. “I’m always looking for ways with my work to put my ideas in front of people that aren’t already converted audience members of mine. Especially younger people, when their ideas about the world are forming. So I spoke with our crew and we came up with the idea that it would be an environmentally-themed series and that this would be all sustainable materials for the packaging so that there’s a consistency in message and practice there. And then also that there’s a charity component, too.” The environmentally-friendly aspect of this pack shouldn’t be understated. Fairey’s UNO Artiste deck follows the launch of UNO’s Nothin’ But Paper, which Mattel describes as “the first fully recyclable UNO deck without cellophane packing materials, part of UNO’s plan to remove the cellophane from 100% of standard, paper-based decks en The rise and fall of the Gap: The iconic but beleaguered brand is counting on a new CEO poached from Mattel
